Canadian import documents<\/strong> are essential to legally import goods into Canada. Before a shipment arrives, several transportation and customs documents must be prepared to ensure regulatory compliance, facilitate customs clearance, and avoid delays at import.<\/p>\n

These documents include a bill of lading, which generally covers transportation, and a commercial invoice or a Canadian Customs Invoice covering the goods. Other documents that may be required are outlined in Module 4.<\/p>\n

Bill of Lading: a key document for importing into Canada<\/h2>\n

A bill of lading is a contract between the shipper and the carrier, completed by the carrier. A properly executed bill of lading is a legal document that confirms the carrier has received the goods from the shipper and is obligated to deliver them in good condition to the consignee. A bill of lading includes the name of the shipper, the consignee, the party to be notified upon arrival of the goods, and is specific to the mode of transport. Other fields include a description of the goods, weight, freight payment terms, and references to any other bills of lading used to transport the same goods.<\/p>\n

Bills of lading may be negotiable or non-negotiable. A negotiable bill of lading applies to goods that may be bought, sold, or traded while in transit, whereas a straight bill of lading names a specific consignee and the goods may only be delivered to that consignee.<\/p>\n

A commonly used term is a clean bill of lading. This term indicates that the goods were received in apparent good order and condition at the time of loading. Unless otherwise stated, the bill of lading is deemed to be clean.<\/p>\n

There are four types of bills of lading: inland, ocean, through, and air waybill. An inland bill of lading applies to goods shipped by land; an ocean bill of lading applies to goods shipped by sea; a through bill of lading is a single document covering both domestic and international transportation of goods between specified points for an agreed charge; and an air waybill covers domestic and international flights transporting goods to a specified destination.<\/p>\n

An ocean bill of lading may serve several purposes. It may be used as:<\/p>\n
